Hackers ramping up attacks against Tibetan activists

Hackers are ramping up their attacks against Tibetan activists and are using increasingly sophisticated techniques to deliver malware, according to researchers from security firms FireEye and Trend Micro.

During the last couple of months, there have been reports from several security vendors about targeted attacks that distributed malware designed to steal confidential information from people or organizations supporting the Tibetan cause.

"No organized group receives targeted attacks with a higher volume or more regularity than Tibetan activists," FireEye senior systems engineer Alex Lanstein said in a blog post on Friday. "Not USG, not US DIB, not Taiwan ... Tibet."

"Everyone, from the personal envoys to the Dalai Lama to student activists in San Francisco, gets hammered day in and day out, often times with pretty high octane stuff," Lanstein said.

The social engineering techniques used in these attacks are increasingly sophisticated and the distributed malware is capable of infecting both Windows and Mac OS X computers.

Back in March, security researchers from AlienVault announced that one of its reports about attacks against Tibetan activists was being quoted in new malicious emails that targeted the same people.

The attackers used AlienVault's report to give their rogue emails more legitimacy and convince activists to open the booby-trapped Word documents attached to them.

A similar technique was used recently to trick Tibetan activists into opening malicious PDF email attachments, by quoting a legitimate email message sent by FireEye's Lanstein to people who submitted Tibet-related malware samples to the VirusTotal online antivirus scanning service.

In his original email, Lanstein asked recipients if they are willing to contribute to a blog entry about attacks against Tibetan activists that he planned on writing.

However, a couple of days later, the researcher was notified by several individuals and organizations that rogue emails, which included his original message and a PDF exploit, were being sent out to people from a Yahoo account. There were several hints in the rogue emails that pointed to a Chinese origin, Lanstein said.

"This incident [involving rogue FireEye emails], along with the one that our friends from AlienVault reported about the usage of their blog post with a HTML copy of their site for these campaigns, shows that the attackers behind these targeted campaigns are becoming more creative to further their agenda," said Ivan Macalintal, threat research manager at Trend Micro, in a blog post on Friday.

Trend Micro's researchers have been keeping track of recent Tibet-related attack campaigns and issued two reports during the past several days about the techniques they've seen being used by the people behind them.

In one campaign, rogue emails sent to Tibetan activists contained a malicious RTF (Rich Text Format) file that exploited an older Microsoft Office vulnerability to install a backdoor, which was itself infected with a virus. The Trend Micro researchers call this hybridized malware.

"In this scenario, attackers are able to maximize system compromise by deploying two different payloads in one execution, leaving a user's machine open to a slew of infection," Trend Micro threat response engineer Roland Dela Paz, said in a blog post on Saturday.

A new attack campaign that targets Tibetan activists distributes malicious RTF files that exploit a Microsoft Office vulnerability patched just one week ago, on April 10, Macalintal said in a blog post on Monday.

On Friday, researchers from antivirus firm Kaspersky Lab reported the discovery of a new Mac OS X backdoor which they named SabPub. On Sunday, they said that the backdoor might have been distributed as part of attacks that targeted Tibetan activists.

Yahoo's new CEO lays out strategy for smaller, more focused company

Yahoo plans to cut about 50 properties and refocus on its core business, CEO Scott Thompson said in an earnings call on Tuesday.

In Thompson's first earnings call that reflected a full quarter of his leadership, he outlined a six-point plan to shrink Yahoo down to a smaller, more profitable business. The call followed the company's report that it saw increased profits, but its total revenue grew by just 1%.

Thompson said he plans to halt initiatives "including platforms for outside publishers" and theoretical research.

Moving forward, Yahoo will focus on its "core media, connections and commerce businesses," Thompson said. He identified "news, finance, sports, entertainment, mail and a handful of others" as the properties that bring in the most revenue and will continue to take the front seat.

"Yahoo has been doing way too much for too long, and it was only doing a few things really well," Thompson said. He said the company needed to "get clear on our core business, dedicate some of our best people and the most resources there and put our customers first."

The company will also look to cut costs by improving its cloud infrastructure and other ways to make "each of our properties more scalable and nimble and flexible and therefore less costly and time-consuming to run," he said.

Thompson also said Yahoo will make "better use of [its] vast data" to provide personalized content, targeted ads, and useful analytics for its advertisers.

Thomson and Tim Morse, Yahoo's chief financial officer, said in the earnings call that the layoffs the company made earlier this month will save it $375 million per year.

As the company narrows its focus, there will almost certainly be more layoffs.

"I don't take the decision to eliminate jobs lightly," Thompson said, "but we have way too many people for the amount of output for this business."

The executives also expressed disappointment with Yahoo's search partnership with Microsoft. Morse said that it "didn't make as much progress, frankly, as we wanted to or envisioned for first quarter and that is concerning."

Thompson said Yahoo will continue to dedicate itself to its work with Microsoft to ensure that the companies stay alive in the search market dominated by Google, but he also alluded to "revisiting the relationship."

Raspberry Pi Quality Testing Successfully Completed

Mini computer gets quality thumbs up, should be on sale shortly

There's some good news on the Raspberry Pi front, the miniature £22 computer which aims to get kids' interest fired up in programming again, and also to give the developing world access to affordable computing.

Initial batches sold like hot cakes - indeed, hot raspberry pies - but the device then hit problems, requiring to be put through testing to gain its CE mark before further units could be sold in the EU.

On its blog page, the Pi Foundation stated: "The Raspberry Pi had to pass radiated and conducted emissions and immunity tests in a variety of configurations (a single run can take hours), and was subjected to electrostatic discharge (ESD) testing to establish its robustness to being rubbed on a cat."

"It's a long process, involving a scary padded room full of blue cones, turntables that rise and fall on demand, and a thing that looks a lot like a television aerial crossed with Cthulhu."

The good news is that the tiny computer has passed those quality tests with flying colours, and it doesn't require any hardware modifications.

There is still the matter of some paperwork to sign, but once that final hurdle is cleared, the Raspberry Pi should be on sale in the UK shortly - and flying off the shelves, no doubt.

London Apple Store Is Preparing For Olympics

What goodies are there for us?

In less than four months, London will be the host of the Olympics, and tourists, journalists and all sorts of visitors will take the city by storm. Apple plans to be ready for them.

A recent London Business Network report suggests that 325,000 people will come to London during the games and Apple officials hope that some of them will visit the local Apple Store.

"London is going to be overrun by an onslaught of journalists when the games begin. We want to be prepared should they need help with their equipment during the time they are here," said a high level Apple retail employee.

According to the estimates, over 10,000 international journalists, some of them Mac users, will head to London on July 27, when the games are set to begin. The number doesn't include the crowds of photographers, editors, new media journalists and bloggers.

The Apple Store from London increased its inventories of MacBook Pro and MacBook Air. The employees are also preparing international MacBook keyboards and other spare parts.

600,000 Apple Computers Infected With Flashback Trojan

Apple’s line of computers are no longer the safe haven for users who have been scared away from Microsoft Windows because of virus infections. A Russian anti-virus firm reported on Thursday that more than 600,000 Apple computers have been infected with the Flashback Trojan.

The trojan essentially allows Apple computers to be hijacked and used as part of a massive “botnet.”

According to the Russian firm more than half of the infected computers are located in the United States.

While Apple has released a security patch to fix the issues, users must choose to download the patch otherwise their computers remain exposed.

In the meantime Flashback isn’t a new problem, it was first discovered by anti-virus researchers in September 2011 when it was pretending to be a Flash Player update. Once downloaded the program deactivated some of Apple’s security software.

In the newest version of the Flashback Trojan virus the malware exposed weaknesses in the Java programming language to install software from bogus sites without the user’s permission.

After a computer was exposed the system was marked with a unique ID which could identify the infected machine.

Most of the bots appear to be in the United States, Canada and Australia with specific attempts to target “English-speaking people.”

While Java developers at Oracle fixed the issue in February 14 for Windows devices that fix did not work with Apple since the company manages Java updates to its computers.

Simple click on your Mac’s “update” feature and you’ll be able to install the patch with very little work on your behalf.

Some TomTom GPS Devices Hit By Leap Year Bug; Fix Now Available

Some users of the TomTom sat-nav GPS devices have been complaining that their devices have been malfunctioning since March 31, with many being unable to find the device’s location at all.

If you’ve been experiencing this problem with your TomTom GPS device, you’re not alone; the company said on Tuesday that a leap year bug in some of the device’s software is to blame for the malfunction. Fortunately, TomTom says that the bug is limited to only a few devices out of its GPS lineup.

According to TomTom, only the Start 20/25, Via 120/125, Via LIVE 120/125, GO LIVE 820/825, and GO LIVE 1000/1005/1005 World devices have been affected by the leap year bug. If you own any of these devices, the company has rolled out a fix, but it requires a little work.

According to the support page, you’ll need to make sure you have download and installed the MyTomTom application on your computer, which you can get at this link. From there, the guide says to connect your GPS device to your computer, and download the latest update.

The documentation says that the TomTom application should start the download automatically, but if not, you can click on “Check for new items” to find the update. After the download is done, you’ll need to press and hold your device’s power button until the device resets.

The fix won’t be instant, however–TomTom says to check if the fix has worked, take the device outside, in a clear view of the sky. If it still isn’t able to determine your location, you’re advised to wait several minutes, as the fix can take some time to go into effect.

Do you own a TomTom GPS? Was your device affected by the leap year bug?

Acer C120 Pico Projector Revealed, Can Be Powered By USB Connection

Acer on Monday unveiled the Acer C120 ultraportable projector, a pico projector that can be powered using your notebook’s USB connection.

While Acer is pushing the USB power option the $259 (MSRP) device also includes an onboard battery although the time restraints for that option have not yet been revealed.

The Acer C120 is powered via USB 3.0 although users who choose that option will notice a drop in brightness. For example the AC power cord option provides 100-lumens while the USB cable drops that brightness down to 75 lumens.

The Acer C120 uses an LED to project images which means the “lamp” lights instantly and the contrast ration is decent but not spectacular at 1000:1 with a throw range from 15.75 inches to 12.14 feet away.

For business travelers the Acer C120 comes in at a very small 4.72 inches wide by one inch high with a depth of 3.23 inches, the C120 is also extremely light at just 6.34 ounces.

According to senior director of product marketing Chris White:

“We’ve designed the Acer C120 projector to be a powerful tool for businesspeople, consultants, real estate agents and anyone who needs an ultra-portable projector that will make their presentations even more effective.   “It’s very convenient to use and provides a range of usage scenarios, making it the ideal companion for anyone that gives presentations on the go.”

The Acer C120 comes in a native format of 16:9 aspect ratio on a WVGA resolution of 854 x 480 pixels or 1280 x 800 pixels with an aspect ratio of 16:10.

Apple Town Hall Meeting Brings Deep Discounts For Apple Employees

Apple CEO Tim Cook announced during a recent Apple town hall meeting that employees will not be able to take advantage of an employee discount program that finally brings the company’s computers and tablets into competitive pricing ranges.

During the meeting Cook revealed that Apple employees can now receive $500 off the price of the company’s Macs and $250 off a brand new iPad device. The only system that appeared to be left out of the mic was the Mac mini, then again why would any Apple employee want to be seen using the company’s wimpiest desktop option.

In order to curb rampant abuse of the system Apple will only allow employees who have been with the company for at least 90 days to take advantage of the discount and current employees can only take advantage of the program every three years.

Up until this point the discount for employees was 25% and it’s still unclear if that discount will remain in effect during the three-year interval period.

Since CEO Tim Cook took over at Apple he has become more employee and charity focused then Steve Jobs, aside from this program he started a charitable donation matching program that encourages employees to give back to their community.

Do you think Tim Cook is doing a good job of turning Apple into a more “employee centric” operation?

NVIDIA Kepler Speed Test: It’s As Fast As Three GTX 580s

Last year Epic Games ran its “Samaritan” Unreal Engine 3 graphics demonstration with the help of three NVIDIA high-end GTX580 cards and this year those cards were replaced by a single NVIDIA Kepler card and the results were believed to be excellent.

The company ran the graphics card to showcase the latest in graphics hardware and Kepler was utilized to power Unreal Engine 4.

Unfortunately before the demonstration was allowed to move forward non-disclosure agreements were signed and the company has not yet released specifical details about the product.

According to Epic Games VP Mark Rein:

“That board we ran the Samaritan demo on is the same board we’re running the Unreal Engine 4 demos on.”

Rein goes on to tell The Verge:

“We can get so more out of that card than what you saw in Samaritan.”

What we do know about the card is that NVIDIA is planning to release several versions of teh Kepler-based card series next month according to a leaked NVIDIA product roadmap.

Among the graphics cards NVIDIA is expected to release in April are the GTX680 and GTX660. The GTX690 will then follow along in May with a cost of $999.

More information about the Kepler cards should begin arriving in the next few weeks.

Apple Confirms: New iPad Tablet Pre-Orders Are Sold Out

Apple on Sunday confirmed that original stock of the new iPad units are sold out. According to Apple executives demand for the new iPad has been “off the charts which allowed the initial pre-order batch to sell out in record time.

While official sales figures for the tablet were not revealed Apple is expected to quickly build more stock to follow the devices March 16 release date.

The company also announced that Apple retail stores will have supply for launch day in the United States and Canada. In the meantime all models are still planned for a March 19 ship date.

Other countries are not as lucky with some shipments two-to-three weeks away from being fulfilled on all models of the new iPad.

Apple’s stock issues are not new, the iPhone 4S sold out before it was even available on the open market.

The new iPad will start initial shipments in ten countries at the same time during the new iPad release.

News of the massive purchase numbers doesn’t bode well for Android tablet sales. The biggest Android seller to date is the Amazon Kindle Fire which has sold approximately four million units from mid-November through the end of December.  Apple has been selling its Kindle Fire units as loss-leaders, costing the company millions of dollars in lost profit.

Do you think the Amazon iPad tablets will continue to rule the market for a long time to come?

Amazon Kindle Fire On Track For New 7-Inch Model While Adding 10-Inch Option [Rumors]

Amazon could be on the verge of reshuffling its tablet business by dropping its 8.9-inch model while providing a new 7-inch display alongside a 10-inch version of the popular Google Android based tablet.

According to Digitimes both Quanta and Foxconn will produce the larger slate. The report also points to E Ink receiving fewer orders which could signal that Amazon is moving further away from traditional Kindle readers as they have become outsold by the original Kindle Fire release.

It’s believed that the two new tablet models won’t be ready to ship until the second half of 2012, dashing earlier reports of a quick turnaround in product by Amazon with a model ready to ship in Spring 2012.

It’s believed that Amazon shipped just shy of four million Kindle Fire tablets in the fall, enough to make the company the leading Google Android tablet seller. Amazon’s price point of $199 was below the cost of manufacturing the tablet however the company’s model allows it to recuperate expenses through a specially designed Amazon app store and various other amazon products including e-Books.

Amazon financial reports show that the company lost half of its profits in the fall because of the Kindle Fire’s loss-leader pricing. Amazon is expected to offer future tablets with the same type of loss-leader pricing to ensure sales and future purchases of digital products.

Would you be willing to pick up a new 7-inch Amazon Kindle Fire or does a 10-inch Amazon Kindle Fire tablet sound like a better long-term investment?

Mesothelioma-Dare to Forgive Others

Beginning in August 2011 there is interesting news from Iran. A beautiful woman who poured the acid damage to her face and her eyes blind to forgive the offender. The woman is Ameneh Bahrami, Iranian-born in 1978, which doused Majid Movahedi in 2004 because of rejected courtship. Movahedi was arrested while waiting for qisas punishment, ie punishment principled retaliation in kind, a kind of punishment "lives life to pay". In the case Bahrami, he may ask the court to blind the eyes of actors as they experienced. The court ruled the law qisas conducted on July 31, 2011 and broadcast live by television.

A few seconds before the acid is splashed in the eye Movahedi, a doctor who would pour liquid Bahrami was asked, "What would you do now?"Movahedi was crying uncontrollably as she knelt. Fear of blindness and eye shadow incomparable pain that made her beg for forgiveness. Everyone was tense watch. A signal from the process Bahrami qisas punishment would be carried out.
However, Bahrami was saying the words beyond expectations. "I forgive him, I forgive him," said Bahrami. Then the eyes of the perpetrator had survived. What a noble attitude Bahrami, he courageously forgiving those who have blinded him throughout his life.
"The best thing is to forgive when we are in a position of power," Bahrami said explaining his decision. But there Bahrami mother saying that we ought to refer to. He said, "Forgiveness is going to calm Bahrami and our family."Friends of the Extraordinary,As I discussed in a live talk show on network Radio Sonora on Monday morning, to review the story "Do not Save the Potato Rot", forgiveness is not easy. But forgiveness can calm us. Conversely, revenge is not necessarily eliminate hatred. Maybe it will grow a sense of guilt within us because of revenge after that we feel as bad as those who have made us suffer.Scientifically any excuse or forgive the other person has a positive value.

The results showed that those who harbored grudges and nurture hatred, his life was not calm. Medically they have a high pulse (unhealthy), high blood pressure, and muscles tighten. If allowed to continue they could be having a heart attack. Instead, they are willing to forgive others, normal blood pressure, normal cardiac work, and his muscles relaxed.

In short, a forgiving have better health records. The study showed that "forgive others" not only good for mental health, but also good for our physical health. Therefore, before Idul Fitri, which will fall a few days away, let's open the door of forgiveness. It would not hurt to forgive others, we even have the benefit of no measure.

San Diego Mesothelioma Lawyers

Understand how to choose a lawyer for this disease, you should first understand the basics of the disease. In the simplest sense, mesothelioma is a cancer of the protective layers of the body cavities, known as the mesothelium.
These tissues have different names depending on the organs they protect. You have probably heard of the peritoneum–this is the covering around the stomach and intestines. Other organs and cavities have their own membranes as well.

Mesothelioma is a cancer of these tissues. They often do not just affect the tissues–they affect the organs they surround and can spread elsewhere. This cancer is most often contracted by exposure to asbestos, a highly dangerous mineral often found in floors, ceilings, and some products.
Employers and landlords are supposed to protect you from asbestos, but often this does not happen. If you have mesothelioma you have probably been exposed to asbestos. If so, you should contact mesotheloma attorneys in your area to see if you have a case against the party responsible for your exposure.

If you have been diagnosed with mesothelioma, your oncologist may be your best source of names for attorney contacts. She will likely have already worked with them on cases and can tell you not only who specializes in your type of cancer but who is best and who is within a short distance from your home or work. If she does not have the right kind of specialist, there are other ways to find the right professional for your case.

You can check with other doctors who deal specifically deal with mesothelioma if your doctor is more of a general oncologist. These doctors may have worked more closely with mesothelioma lawyers in your area of southern California. You can also call local hospitals, various cancer support groups–area law schools are also excellent for references. Also check your union or professional group if you were exposed on the job.

Regardless of where you find your contacts, interview the lawyer, check on his or her background, and get references if you can. If you are ill, the last thing you need is more trouble.

Ocean life threatened by industrial emissions

The Earth's oceans are acidifying at the fastest rate in 300 million years, threatening marine life
Ocean marine life is at unprecedented risk as our oceans are acidifying at the fastest rate in 300 million years, scientists say.

The rise in the ocean's water acidity comes as the seas absorb a quarter of carbon dioxide polluting the atmosphere, which in turn as increased by nearly a third over the past century.

Professor Andy Ridgwell, of Bristol University, is alarmed by the unprecedented rice in acidity levels.

"Current acidification is potentially unparalleled in the last 300 million years," he said.

Past instances of ocean acidification have been linked with mass extinctions of marine life.

Barbel Honisch, of Columbia University, wrote in Science journal: "If industrial carbon emissions continue at the current pace, we may lose coral reefs, oysters and salmon."

Researchers based in the United States, the United Kingdom, The Netherlands, Germany and Spain contributed to the study, which was funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation.

Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck Give Normal Name to Newborn Son

Shortly after words came out that Jennifer Garner has given birth to a baby boy, Ben Affleck reveals the name he and his wife gave to their newborn. While many celebrities opted to go with unique and uncommon monikers, the Hollywood couple chose a normal one for their third child together, Samuel.

On Wednesday, February 29, the star/director of "The Town" took to his official Facebook page to confirm the arrival of his son, and used the opportunity to unveil the boy's name. "We are happy to announce on February 27, Jennifer gave birth to a healthy baby boy, Samuel Garner Affleck," so he wrote.

Back in January, Affleck's wife, Garner, shared to TV host Jay Leno that her young daughters have some interesting ideas for their brother's name. "Our girls are working on names. At first they were definitely Disney," she said at the time. "It was like, Donald Duck, Minnie Mouse Affleck. And then they've moved on. Then it was Peter Pan, Captain Hook, Smee."

Affleck and Garner announced they were expecting their third child together in August 2011. Through their representatives, the Hollywood couple said in a simple statement that they were "thrilled" over the news. Earlier, it was reported that they welcomed their new bundle of joy, who joins sisters 6-year-old Violet and 3-year-old Seraphina, in Santa Monica, California.

Ice Age flower revived: Russian scientists resurrect ancient plant after 30,000 frozen years

Scientists in Russia have resurrected a flower from the contents of an Ice Age squirrel's burrow containing fruit and seeds that had been stuck in the Siberian permafrost for more than 30,000 years

A team of Russian scientists have successfully grown a blossoming flower from fruit tissues found in an Ice Age squirrel's burrow in the banks of the Kolyma River in Siberia.

The scientists reported their achievement in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), noting that the so-called Silene stenophylla plant has been resurrected from what is by far the oldest plant material to have been brought to life.

The team found around 70 squirrel hibernation burrows in the Siberian river bank.

"All burrows were found at depths of 20-40m from the present day surface and located in layers containing bones of large mammals such as mammoth, woolly rhinoceros, bison, horse, deer, and other representatives of fauna from the age of mammoths, as well as plant remains," they reported.

"The squirrels dug the frozen ground to build their burrows, which are about the size of a soccer ball, putting in hay first and then animal fur for a perfect storage chamber," said Stanislav Gubin, one of the authors of the study, who spent years rummaging through the area for squirrel burrows. "It’s a natural cryobank."

The scientists say the world's permafrost — which makes up about 20 percent of the planet's surface — could be a vast time capsule, a place where ancient life is preserved, could be revived, and could speak volumes about the evolution of life on Earth.

Dame Judi Dench vows to continue acting despite eyesight problems

Oscar-winning actress Dame Judi Dench revealed she is battling to save her sight after being diagnosed with macular degeneration

LONDON, United Kingdom -- Dame Judi Dench, an Oscar-winning actress and also famous for her role in several James Bond movies, has revealed she had been diagnosed with age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and is struggling to read scripts or recognise faces.

AMD causes severe vision impairment and can lead to blindness.

Dame Judi, 77, has undergone treatment and is hoping it will stop the progression of the condition and allow her to continue working.

However, Dame Judi, who won a best supporting actress Oscar in 1998 for her role as Queen Elizabeth I in Shakespeare in Love, said she had no plans to let her eye condition force her retirement.

"You get used to it. I've got lenses and glasses and things and very bright light helps," she said.

Judi Dench is set to return to her role of M in the 23rd James Bond movie, Skyfall, alongside Daniel Craig as 007.

Dench has received many award nominations for her acting in theatre, film and television; her awards include ten BAFTAs, (including the Bafta Fellowship in 2001) seven Laurence Olivier Awards, two Screen Actors Guild Awards, two Golden Globes, an Academy Award, and a Tony Award. In June 2011, she received a fellowship from the British Film Institute (BFI).
